This Frozen Hot Chocolate is everything you love about a rich classic cup of hot cocoa, but in an icy frosty treat – that makes it perfect for summer, or whenever you want a cool twist on a cozy favorite!

My recipe uses real hot cocoa mix, and a blend of milk, and ice to create a smooth, icy drink, without it being too heavy. It’s so easy to make a home, with just a few ingredients, and it really hits that sweet spot every time the craving strikes.
It’s the perfect mash up of the flavor of hot chocolate, but blended into a chilly frosty drink. Just imagine you’re sipping it at Serendipity Cafe in New York City, instead of at home on a hot spring day. But this is much cheaper, and you can enjoy it any time! Really this is so good, you’ll want it all year long!

This is a quick overview of the ingredients you’ll need for this Frozen Hot Cocoa Recipe. Specific measurements and full recipe instructions are in the printable recipe card below.
- Chocolate – Use your favorite, milk chocolate, semi sweet, or dark.
- Milk – I recommend using whole milk for the richest drink, but
- Hot Chocolate Mix – Use your favorite brand, I love Ghiradelli or Stephen’s.
- Ice – Use crushed ice if your blender isn’t as high powered. Start with less and add more as needed.
- Whipped Cream – My favorite garnish, don’t skip!

How to make Frozen Hot Cocoa

Step 1: Melt the Chocolate. Finely chop the chocolate and melt it in the microwave at half powder, in 30 second increments until you can stir it smooth.

Step 2: Mix. Stir in the hot chocolate mix, granulated sugar until blended. Then slowly add in 1/2 cup of the milk until it’s nice and smooth. Let it cool for about 10 minutes. Then pour in the rest of the milk to cool the mixture down. If it’s still warm place it in the fridge to keep chilling.

Step 3: Blend it all Up. Add the ice and chocolate milk mixture to a blender and mix at high speed until its smooth. Pour into separate glasses.

Step 4: Garnish. Top each glass with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and chocolate shavings if desired.
Tips and Tricks
- Want it even creamier: Add 1/2 cup of half and half or a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the blender to make the drink extra creamy.
- Make it Mocha: Add 1 1/2 TBS of instant coffee powder to the melted chocolate to turn the drink into a Mocha Frappuccino. The perfect afternoon pick me up.
- High Powered Blender – A high powered blender will give your drink the best smooth texture. With a lower powered blender you’ll want to use crushed ice if possible.
- Chocolate Milk – Try chocolate milk instead of regular milk for an even stronger chocolatey flavor.
