Why make this recipe
- Quick and Easy: This fudge is surprisingly easy to make, with only a few simple ingredients – the chocolate can be heated in a pot on the stove, or in a bowl in the microwave. The best part is you don’t even need a candy thermometer – it doesn’t beat that for easy.
- Perfect for Gifting: This makes a great homemade gift for your friends during the holidays. So could packaged up in cellophane bags, or included in your cookie trays.
- Decadent Flavor: The combination of the chocolate and mint create such a rich, and refreshing flavor. My kids told me they taste like Utah Mint Truffles, so if you love those, you’ll love this!
Ingredients Needed
This is a quick overview of the ingredients you’ll need for this Mint Chocolate Fudge Recipe. Specific measurements and full recipe instructions are in the printable recipe card below.
- white chocolate chips
- semi-sweet chocolate chips – can be substituted for dark chocolate chips, or milk chocolate instead
- sweetened condensed milk – comes in a can, not to be confused with evaporated milk
- peppermint extract – I prefer the peppermint only flavor, if you like the mix of peppermint and spearmint try “mint extract” instead
- green food coloring – you can use a gel food coloring, or liquid food coloring for this recipe
How to make Chocolate Mint Fudge
Step 1: Melt the white chocolate. Add the white chocolate chips, and half of the sweetened condensed milk to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second increments, stirring for 30 seconds after each portion, until you can stir the chocolate smooth. Add in a few drops of green food coloring and mint extract, and stir them into the melted white chocolate.
Step 2: Melt the chocolate. Add the semisweet chocolate chips and the remaining sweetened condensed milk to the bowl, and follow the same method, microwave in 30 second increments until you can stir the chocolate mixture smooth. You don’t want to over heat your chocolate.
Step 3: Dollop. Add spoon-fuls of each of both the mint and chocolate fudge mixture into a lined square pan, alternating as you add them. Gently tap the pan on the counter to remove any air bubbles.
Step 4: Swirl into a marble pattern. Gently use a butter knife to swirl through the fudge to give it a marbled look. Let the fudge sit at room temperature until it is set (or place it in the fridge to chill and harden faster).
Step 5: Slice into pieces. Carefully remove the fudge out of the pan with the foil (or parchment paper). Cut off the rough edges of the fudge to make a clean edge. Slice the fudge into small squares, about an inch sized pieces. I usually get 25 pieces, you could cut another row on one side and get 30, or on both sides for 36 pieces.
How to make it on the stove?
Instead of microwaving to melt the chocolate you can add the white chocolate and sweetened condensed milk to a small saucepan and heat it over low heat, stirring often until the chips are melted. Stir in the mint and food coloring as needed. In another pan melt the chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk. Repeat remaining steps.
Tips and Tricks
- Double the Recipe: If you are making this fudge for a Christmas party or for a bunch of Christmas cookie trays, you can easily double the recipe. Pour it into a 9×13 pan instead of a 8 or 9inch square pan. It will be slightly thicker, but you should be able to cut it into at least 54 pieces.
- Extra Minty – If you want a stronger mint flavor, add an extra 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the chocolate mixture as well.
- Added Texture – Add in chopped Oreos, or chopped nuts, or candy canes to give the fudge a crunchy texture.
Storage Instructions
Once the fudge is set you can store the pieces in a ziplock bag or airtight container. It can be stored at room temperature (if your kitchen isn’t too warm) or in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
You can also freeze the fudge if you want to store it longer. Wrap it first in plastic wrap, then in a freezer safe container. It can be frozen for up to 3 months. You can thaw individual pieces to enjoy when needed, or all of it for holiday events. It can be thaws at room temperature for a few hours, or in the fridge overnight.
What if my fudge doesn’t set?
If the fudge doesn’t set you can try reheating it on the stove and adding in a extra 1/2 cup or so of chocolate chips. You’ll lose your beautiful marbled look, but the fudge flavor should still be delicious.
This mint chocolate fudge is such a delicious and easy to make treat that’s a perfect way to satisfy your sweet tooth, or make for sharing. It’s rich, chocolatey, minty, and so delicious for the Christmas holiday season, or for St. Patrick’s Day.
