The chocolate log cuts up so beautiful with the pieces of colorful marshmallow inside like a stained glass window. Not to be confused with Stained Glass Window Cookies, which are a sugar cookie with a hard candy window peaking through the middle.
They cut up so beautifully, and will taste just like the ones you remember from your childhood.

Ingredients Needed
This is a quick overview of the ingredients you’ll need for this Church Window Cookie Recipe. Specific measurements and full recipe instructions are in the printable recipe card below.
- Unsalted Butter – Gives the chocolate a smoother texture
- Chocolate Chips – Coats the marshmallows and holds everything together
- Walnuts – Dice these up into small pieces, and they’ll add the perfect crunch to the cookies. You can also use pecans.
- Multi Colored Marshmallows – These give the cookies they’re nice stained glass church window appearance
- Shredded Coconut – This is rolled around the logs to keep everything from being sticky, and for a little extra flavor.

How to make Church Window Cookies

Step 1: Melt the Chocolate. Add the chocolate chips and butter to a medium sauce pan over low heat. Stir together until they are both totally melted, and smooth. Remove from the heat and let the chocolate cool for a few minutes.

Step 2: Mix it all Together. Add the marshmallows and nuts to a large mixing bowl. Pour the slightly cooled chocolate over the top and fold it all together until coated.

Step 3: Add Coconut. Lay out 2 pieces of plastic wrap and sprinkle each with some of the coconut (reserving a little for later).

Step 4: Make the Logs. Divide the chocolate mixture, placing half on top of each coconut portion in a long log shape. Sprinkle the reserved coconut on top. Use the plastic wrap to roll the mixture up and shape it even more into a log shape, pressing and pushing where needed. Twist the plastic wrap ends to close. Place in the fridge to chill for at least 1 hour.

Step 5: Slice into pieces. Use a serrated knife to cut the logs into 1/2 inch pieces to reveal the church windows.
Tips and Tricks
- Use Low Heat: Melt the chocolate and butter over low heat, stirring often to keep the chocolate from getting overheated. The butter helps smooth it out, but we still want to make sure we don’t scorch the chocolate.
- Coconut Substitute: If you don’t like coconut, you can roll the logs in powdered sugar instead.
- Use a Serrated Knife: Using a serrated knife works best for slicing your log into pieces.

Storage Instructions
Store the logs wrapped in plastic wrap in the fridge for up to 1 week. They will store better in the logs, and not pre-sliced. Slice them when you are ready to serve them.
You can also freeze the logs. Wrap them tightly in the plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer safe bag. They can be frozen for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before slicing and serving.

These Church Windows are simple, and nostalgic, and perfect for the holidays. They have such a fun appearance, and chocolatey flavor. They’re such a fun favorite to make year after year.
