- salt – for the perfect balance of flavors
- baking powder – just a little to help the brownies rise
Ingredients Needed to bake brownies
- Eggs – To bind everything together
- Vegetable Oil – You can also use canola oil, or your favorite neutral flavored cooking oil
- Vanilla Extract – Adds a nice flavor
How to make Homemade Brownie Mix
You can layer your ingredients in the jar to look extra pretty, or pre-mix them all together. Both options work equally since they’ll be poured into a bowl and mixed dry later. I mix the flour with the baking powder and salt for ease.
For the layered look I prefer to separate my flour and sugar so the colors stand out. In the jar below, I layered granulated sugar, cocoa powder, mini chocolate chips, flour mixture. You can play around with it and see what you like. The mix should fill the jar up to the top, so push each layer down from the top so you can fit them all.
For the mixed look you can add everything to a bowl, whisk it together and pour it into your jar. Use a funnel to avoid spilling anything over the sides of the jar.
Seal the jars up with their lid tightly, and decorate the jars with a ribbon or bow. Don’t forget to add the baking instructions on the jar with a tag tied on, or sticker on top.
To make the brownies
Add the dry brownie mix to a large bowl and stir. Add 2 large eggs, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, and 1 tsp vanilla to the mix and stir until combined. Bake at 350 F for about 25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let the brownies cool, slice and enjoy.
Make sure to write the instructions on the jar, or bag you store the brownie mix in before sharing with friends. You can also include my free printable tags and print those to include with the mix. Use a hole punch to make a small hole in the left corner of the tag and tie it onto the jar with ribbon or baker’s twine.
Tips and Tricks:
- Mocha Flavor – You can add up to 1 teaspoon of instant coffee or espresso powder to the cocoa layer, or mixed brownie mix to make an extra strong chocolate flavor!
- Nice layers – To create a pretty presentation in the jars, press each layer down as you add it with a rubber spatula, then tap the jar on the counter slightly to settle the layers evenly.
- Don’t forget the tag – Don’t forget to include a gift tag to make sure your loved ones can prepare their brownies when the time comes! Include the required extra ingredients (2 eggs, 1/2 cup oil, and 1 tsp vanilla extract), and how to prepare and bake up the brownies!
- Bigger Batch – If you want to store bigger batches of homemade brownie mix for yourself you can. Double or triple the recipe and store it in a ziplock bag or container. Scoop our 14 oz of the mix when you’re ready to make, and follow the baking instructions as directed.
