Ingredients Needed
This is a quick overview of what you’ll need for to make these Hot Chocolate Spoons. Specific measurements and full recipe instructions are in the printable recipe card below.
- Wooden Spoons – you can also use a different kind of spoons, like plastic spoons, but I like the look of the wooden better.
- Parchment Paper – to let the chocolate spoons set on
- High Quality Chocolate or Chocolate Chips – you can use milk chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate, or even dark chocolate chips. High quality bars of chocolate work great too, chop the chocolate into small pieces before melting.
- High Quality White Baking Chips – Use Ghiradelli or Guittard
- Assorted Toppings – some good choices are mini marshmallows, crushed candy canes, toffee bits, mini chocolate chips, chopped Andes mints, peppermint bark, Caramel Bits, etc.
How to make Hot Chocolate Spoons
- Melt the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl in 20 to 30-second intervals, stirring after each until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
- Dip each spoon into the melted chocolate, and scoop it up into the spoon, spinning it around to coat. Use another spoon to spoon extra chocolate into the cavity of the spoon.
- Sprinkle the desired toppings onto the spoons, and place them carefully onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let the chocolate cool and harden.
- Use spoons to stir your favorite hot beverages, and make your cups of cocoa extra rich with a little extra chocolate.
Tips and Tricks
- For thicker chocolate – Let the chocolate dry in between coats and add multiple layers of melted chocolate to each spoon. You can also pour the chocolate into a silicone ice cube tray and stick the spoons into the mold, then sprinkle toppings, for an extra amount of chocolate on each spoon.
- High Quality Chocolate – Use a high quality chocolate bar or chocolate chips (Guittard or Ghiradelli) for the best flavor, and smooth melting.
- Package – Wrap each spoon individually in small cellophane bags and tie them with a ribbon or string for a nice gift.
Flavor Varieties
- Peppermint – If you love peppermint hot chocolate, try adding a few drops of peppermint extract to the melted chocolate. Make sure to use peppermint, not spearmint to keep it from tasting like toothpaste. Also delicious with crushed candy cane pieces on top of the spoon.
- Salted Caramel -After melting the chocolate and dipping the spoons, melt soft caramels or caramel bits in the microwave with a little heavy cream until soft and spoon-able. Spoon over the top of the chocolate, then sprinkle tops with flakey sea salt.
Storage Instructions
Once the chocolate is set, these hot chocolate spoons can be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to a week. You can also freeze them for about 2 months.
These hot chocolate stirring spoons are such a fun way to make your own hot chocolate. Add your choice of hot cocoa spoon to your cup of warm milk, with a little hot cocoa powder, and stir it all up to make the best cup of hot chocolate for a cold day!

I made these for a hot chocolate bar for my book club. They thought they were so awesome and “fancy”. Everyone loved them. They were super easy to make too, so easy my 4 year old granddaughter was helping.
